Electric vehicle pioneer Tesla is rattling the chains of its major competitors with its recent calls to the Biden administration to impose harsher standards regarding fuel economy well into the next decade.
On Tuesday, October 17th, Tesla officials called on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to sign off on rules that would push vehicular stringency up by 6% a year for cars, and around 8% per annum for trucks and SUVs, claiming that the move would be a step towards addressing climate changes, even as it helps individual motorists conserve energy.
Back in July, the NHTSA proposed an increase of around 2% for cars and 4% for trucks and SUVs with regard to their corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) requirements. If approved, this would lead to a standard fuel efficiency of nearly 60 miles a gallon by the early 2030s.
