The winds of change have covered the US for the first half of 2021. According to an S&P Global Market Intelligence report, the country has connected 6.1 GW capacity to the power grid. Meet the US 10 biggest wind facilities in 2021 thus far.
1. Maverick Creek Wind Project
Location: Concho, Texas
A massive 492-MW wind project, Maverick Creek Wind Project, is currently Americas largest wind facility as of 2021. Ownership lies with Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. and RES developed the facility. It can produce energy credits to match 100% of the power utilized yearly at the domestic facilities in General Mills.
2. Jordan Creek Wind Farm
Location: Warren, Indiana
A project of NextEra Energy, this 400-MW wind facility uses 146 turbines. The wind facility generates $590 in tax revenues and $75 million in landowner payments throughout its life cycle.
3. Isabella Wind Project – Isabella, Michigan
Location: Isabella, Michigan
This 384-MW wind facility caters explicitly to commercial clients, such as General Motors, the University of Michigan, and Ford. It is a 384 MW facility expected to generate over $130 million in taxes and landowner payments.
4. Frontier Windpower II Project – Kay, Oklahoma
Location: Kay, Oklahoma
This Oklahoma-based wind farm has been operating since 2016. It is owned and operated by Duke Energy. Its the second wind project for the company and boosts its first venture with a 350 MW wind farm producing 550 MW of energy, capable of lighting up 193,000 homes.
5. Deuel Harvest Wind Farm
Location: – Deuel, South Dakota
This wind farm is owned and operated by Southern Power and is 301 MW and powered by 109 wind turbines. All of its turbines are produced by GE Renewable Energy.
6. Neosho Ridge Wind Project
Location: Neosho, Kansas
This wind project is owned by Liberty Utilities and powered by 139 turbines and 300 MW capacity. It will slash power costs by $169M within two decades.
7. Milligan I Wind Project
Location: Saline, Nebraska
This Nebraska wind farm is operated and owned by partners EDF Renewables North America and Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives. It is a 299-MW facility that generates power through 99 turbines (Vestas V110, Siemens 145, and Siemens 129).
8. Aurora Wind Project
Location: Williams, North Dakota
This 299-MW North Dakota wind facility is developed, owned, and operated by Enel Green Power North America. It generates power through 71 turbines that generate a yearly output of 1.3 terawatt-hours (TWh). The power generated from this facility is sufficient to power more than 100,000 homes.
9. Las Majadas Wind Project
Location: Willacy, Texas
The wind facility developed by EDF Renewables can generate 272 MW power from its 125 turbines. The project was commercially operational by March 2021. Two years ago, Abu Dhabi-based investment firm Masdar bought a 50% stake in the wind project.
10. Texas Gulf Wind Repower
Location: Kenedy, Texas
This wind farm is a sprawling 9,600 acres with recently installed 118 Siemens Gamesa 2.3-MW turbines. Overall, it can generate 271 MW of wind power.
