Vision Marine Taps F1-Grade Engineering for Electric Powertrain

A strategic partnership with McLaren Engineering is helping (NASDAQ:VMAR) lead the charge in electric boat propulsion.

Vision Marine Technologies recently announced a major accomplishment.

After years of development and rigorous testing, the company’s proprietary fully electric E-Motion™  broke the world electric speed record.

As illustrated in the documentary, “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop”, the powerboat fitted with Vision Marine’s powertrain technology, reached 116 mph in the hands of three-time world champion Formula 1 boat racer, Shaun Torrente.

The company’s technology represents a significant leap forward in marine propulsion – combining advanced battery packs, inverters, and high-efficiency motors with proprietary software and assembly techniques to deliver an impressive 180 continuous horsepower.

And now with the launch of its revolutionary E-Motion™ “inboard” electric motor system just last month, they’re bringing the same proven technology to a wider marketplace.

The powertrain system is designed as a turnkey solution for boat manufacturers, offering a fully integrated, ready-to-implement setup. Built on the robust foundation of the same award-winning electric powertrain that set a previous world speed record, this new development not only opens a vital market segment for Vision Marine but also broadens the range of vessels that can benefit from its cutting-edge electric propulsion technology.

This news couldn’t be timelier, coming just as the sector is seeing unprecedented growth.

You see, while electric vehicles may get the media attention, the electric boating sector has been quietly experiencing a revolution of its own.

While the outboard motors used in the record-breaking speed run were not standard 180E models, they shared the same core architecture and system, highlighting the scalability and robustness of the E-Motion™ platform.

The Future Of Marine Propulsion

The shift from combustion engines to electric power has been building for years — and now, it’s accelerating across nearly every transportation sector.

Tesla helped kick off the modern EV revolution and remains a symbol of what’s possible when bold innovation meets market readiness. But it’s no longer alone. Major automakers and mobility companies—from GM and Ford to Volvo, Toyota, and BMW—are pouring billions into electrification.

The boating sector is no exception. The $18.9 billion recreational boating market is growing at 6.5% annually, on pace to hit $25.9 billion by 2028.¹ With consumer preferences shifting, leading manufacturers are scrambling to adapt.

Mercury Marine, a legacy name in marine propulsion, has launched its own internal electric division. Yamaha recently acquired Torqeedo, the global leader in electric boat motors.² These moves reflect not just innovation, but necessity—companies know the transition is no longer optional.

That’s where Vision Marine Technologies (NASDAQ:VMAR) stands apart. Backed by McLaren’s elite performance engineers, Vision Marine has emerged as an early mover – bringing Formula 1-grade innovation to the water. Their E-Motion™ 180E inboard and outboard systems deliver scalable, real-world electric propulsion built for speed, power, and endurance.

Pioneering A New Era in Electric Boating

“Vision Marine is at the forefront of the electric boating revolution, setting new standards for performance, reliability, and sustainability. The E-Motion™ 180e is a game changer that is leading the industry into a cleaner future.”

– Alex Mongeon, CEO of Vision Marine Technologies

With the assistance of McLaren Engineering, Vision Marine Technologies (NASDAQ:VMAR) is redefining a sector long dominated by internal combustion engines.

The company’s outboard motor is versatile, with 17 seamless integrations, over (including the single largest brand), and across 4 different platforms. It also comes with strategic advantages when compared to a conventional gas-powered engine.

Lower operating costs, less maintenance, and optimal user experience are just a few of the reasons Vision Marine’s electric motors are gaining in popularity:

  • Increased performance, reliability, and ease of use: Electric boat motors offer several performance advantages such as instant torque delivery. This allows for smooth, quick acceleration and better handling in addition to a more modern feel due to computerizied powertrain and touchscreens. Consumers can operate these controls onboard with ease, including the boat’s entertainment system.Enhanced reliability is another key benefit of electric boat motors. With fewer moving parts and no need for spark plugs or complex ignition systems, electric outboards are far more dependable than traditional gas engines. Unlike gas engines, which can be prone to starting issues due to spark plug or fuel system complications, electric motors reliably start every time.

This design simplicity translates to fewer mechanical failures and a consistently smooth boating experience, giving users peace of mind on the water. And with a computerized powertrain and touchscreens, consumers can operate the controls onboard, including the boat’s entertainment system, with ease.
  • Winning economics: While initially more expensive to purchase, the E-Motion 180e motor has considerably lower ongoing expenses. Electricity is significantly less expensive than gasoline, allowing for continuous cost savings during operation. There are also fewer mechanical parts to maintain. For example, internal combustion engines require regular maintenance, such as oil changes and filter replacements.

The E-Motion 180e can operate for approximately 5,000 hours before it needs an overhaul rather than needing an engine overhaul after 100 hours of use which we believe is standard with conventional motors .
  • Protecting waterways and marine life: The E-Motion™ system has a clear advantage from an environmental impact perspective. It doesn’t produce emissions when operating, so it has a reduced impact on air and water quality. That means no fuel smell typical of an internal combustion engine, and no pollution or unsightly oil rainbows on the water. The E-Motion 180e’s quiet operation also minimizes noise pollution, allowing for a more natural experience. The noise from traditional boat engines has a considerable drawback — often scaring away wildlife and fish, making conversation impossible at speed, and disturbing the tranquility of remote locations.

And because more than 90% of Vision Marine’s motor components are sourced in North America, the company is also upholding a commitment to support clean, environmentally responsible domestic manufacturing and logistics.
  • Easy, versatile charging capability: Vision Marine’s versatile motors can be charged off any outlet, at both 110 and 220-volt stations. The motors are even capable of being charged off an electric vehicle… simultaneously while being towed. They’re also fast. On a regular 110-volt plug, three batteries can charge in six hours. At 220 volts, cut the time in half.

Industry Leading Partnerships Expand Market Potential

A series of strategic partnerships have secured Vision Marine Technologies (NASDAQ:VMAR) a coveted position within the electric boating industry.

Most notably, the company’s longstanding collaboration with the Linamar Corporation allows them the capacity and resources to expand market influence and operational scale quickly.

Linamar Corporation is a $5.6 billion manufacturing giant and the parent company of McLaren Group. That amounts to a multi-fold benefit.

While McLaren brings engineering expertise, Linamar’s manufacturing arm can also provide Vision Marine the resources and production capacity needed to meet growing demand for their technology. The partnership with Linamar is expected to allow for the development of up to 18,000 E-Motion™ motors per year, ensuring Vision Marine is well supplied to expand market presence.

This scalable production, combined with North American-sourced components and rigorous product testing, gives Vision Marine Technologies (NASDAQ:VMAR) a critical edge over competitors.

With supply chains in place, assembly certifications in order, and inventory on hand – it’s now a matter of getting the product into consumer’s hands. And according to a handful of recent news releases, that’s happening quickly and is already receiving excellent response.

When major manufacturer FourWinns debuted their H2e Electric Bowrider, it was outfitted it with the most powerful electric powertrain on the market – Vision Marine’s 180e system. It then went on to win top place in the Runabout category in Boating Magazine’s Boat of the Year awards5.

In April 2025, Vision Marine and German boatbuilder STERK (MS Marine GmbH) announced the successful completion of a key engineering milestone under their exclusive supply agreement. The two companies collaborated on a full internal hull optimization—reconfiguring STERK’s vessels to house the E-Motion™ 180E system and accommodate a range of high-voltage battery layouts.

This purpose-built hull marks a critical step toward commercial rollout and underscores Vision Marine’s ability to scale premium electric powertrains across performance-focused OEM platforms.

Vision Marine Technologies (NASDAQ:VMAR) also recently teamed up with ePropulsion to develop The Phantom – a ground-breaking new ‘fully plastic’ electric boat model. Crafted from innovative plastic rotomolding technology, the boat showcases a customized electric ePropulsion system. A fiberglass version called the Volt is currently being developed and will feature the same customized motor system.

And in recent development, a series of strategic partnerships have Vision Marine making headway in the fast-growing pontoon market.

Wired Pontoons recently placed a purchase order for 25 units of the E-Motion 180e. Noting a considerable drop in demand for internal combustion engine pontoons, and after evaluating various options, Wired Pontoons found Vision Marine’s 180e systems to be an “ideal fit for their clientele.”6

This past December, the company announced a production partnership with Massimo Marine to develop the very first fully integrated commercial electric pontoon platform.

Just weeks later, a second announcement pointed to a partnership with premier boat manufacturer, Armada Pontoons, to produce an innovative electric pontoon specifically tailored for North America’s regulated lakes.

Vision Marine is also exploring opportunities to acquire boat platforms as part of its next expansion phase. Discussions are ongoing, though details about potential partners remain undisclosed.

Government Incentives Accelerate Sector Growth

The transition to cleaner boating practices was in motion long before electric vehicles became mainstream. Pollution of waterways and oceans has been a growing concern for decades.

Its why Congress passed the Clean Boating Act in 2008, which establishes strict controls over boat pollution, regulating the discharge of pollutants into U.S. waters by recreational vehicles. 7

Many states have also developed strict rules and regulations, with some waterways forbidding any gas-powered engines in order to protect sensitive ecosystems. More are expected to follow suit.

And in a further effort to encourage the changeover, generous tax incentives have been offered by both federal and state agencies – essentially attempting to remove the cost-barrier associated.

In fact, the effort is considered so critical that certain tax incentives for purchasing electric boat motors are up to 10x the value of the incentives offered for electric vehicles.

Take for example, California’s CORE Act which accelerates the deployment of zero-emission off-road equipment through purchase incentives. As part of the program, California has agreed to pay the difference in cost between the purchased electric motor and a standard internal combustion motor.

That would make electric motors like the 180e equivalent in cost to an internal combustion engine. Add in the cost savings from fuel and maintenance and the ease of charging and maintenance, and it’s not surprising the electric boat purchases are on the rise.
